Pack light. Be happy.

You would think that with my frequent trips to Italy, I'd have packing down to a science. The truth is, I still get a little anxious each time I drag out the suitcase and start thinking how to maximize the space.

So if you’re planning a trip to Italy, here are a few tips for packing:

Comfortable shoes. I don’t care what you say, this should be your number one priority. Pack the most comfortable shoes/sandals you own.

Bubble wrap. Regardless of what you purchase in Italy, I can almost guarantee that bubble wrap will come in handy. But, it’s especially helpful if you’re planning to transport home ceramics, wine, balsamic vinegar, or olive oil. Be sure to pack bubble wrap because it’s hard to find in Italy and besides, it won’t add weight to your suitcase.

Light sweater or jacket. When packing clothes, think layers. Even in the summer, when the days tend to get very hot, evenings in Italy can be cool and require something to throw over your shoulders.

Medications. When packing prescriptions, also consider packing a separate list of your prescriptions and your pharmacy contact information. If you lose your medication while traveling you can easily take your list to a local pharmacist and they will refill your prescriptions for you.

Finally, it goes without saying — pack light! The lighter you pack, the happier you will be.
