How to create an Italian-inspired Thanksgiving dinner

If you’re looking to change up your menu this year, why not add an Italian twist to your traditional Thanksgiving? Italians are famous for their cuisine, and they’ve been celebrating the harvest for centuries.

Here are some ideas to create an Italian-inspired Thanksgiving dinner that will have your guests saying “Mamma Mia!”

COCKTAILS

Aperol Spritz: Who says spritzes are for summer only? It’s signature orange color screams celebration and it’s easy to make. Combine 3 ounces Prosseco, 2 ounces Aperol, 1 ounce club soda. Pour over ice and garnish with an orange slice.

Negroni: composed of equal parts gin, vermouth, and Campari and served straight up or on ice. Or, try a “Negroni Sbagliato,” (the broken Negroni), by simply using prosecco instead of gin.

Prosecco: Classy as is or dress it up with festive cranberries

VINO

For white wine lovers, consider a crisp white, from Italy’s northeastern regions of Veneto, Friuli or Trentino-Alto Adige, or a Sicilian white made from grapes grown at the foothills of Mt. Etna.

There are many Italian red wine options, but some of my favorites come from Italy’s northwest region of Piedmont. Nebbiolo, Barbaresco or Dolcetto d’Alba are all good choices.

ANTIPASTI (APPETIZERS)

Classic Italian charcuterie platter: prosciutto, salami, cheese (gorgonzola, pecorino, fontina, fresh mozzarella), nuts, breadsticks, and olives. Click here for ideas.

Bruschetta or crostini with hearty mushrooms, liver pate or prosciutto. The possibilities are endless.

Focaccia with rosemary and sea salt.

Roasted pears with nuts, gorgonzola, and a drizzle of honey. Use your favorite: hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds or pecans.

PRIMI (FIRST COURSE)

Squash Risotto

Eggplant Parmigiana

Pumpkin Ravioli with Sage Butter Sauce

SECONDI (SECOND COURSE)

Balsamic-Glazed Turkey

Porchetta (Italian Pork Roast)

Peposa (Tuscan beef stew) with mashed potatoes. A great option for those who don’t care for the traditional turkey.

INSALATA/CONTORNI (SIDES)

Blood orange and fennel salad

Roasted vegetables (zucchini, peppers and eggplant). Just toss them in olive oil and salt & pepper and roast them in the oven.

Roasted potatoes

DOLCE (DESSERT)

Fruit crostata (apples or pears)

Cranberry and pistacchio biscotti

Classic tiramisu

Fresh figs
