Tip: See major sites in Italy at your own pace

We tend to avoid the most tourist-packed places, but we understand many travelers want to see the famous historic and artistic marvels of Italy. Here's one recommendation if you really want to see and do all the top attractions you've heard about: Take a Hop On Hop Off bus that runs a circuit to all major destinations.

It definitely feels touristy, but touring Florence or Rome at your own pace on a hop-on hop-off bus can be more relaxing than a more rigidly scheduled day tour, and usually less expensive. The open upper seating is way more scenic than the back of a taxi or tour van. The Florence route typically includes the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio bridge, Piazzale Michelangelo with its panoramic view, and the Boboli Gardens. Rome routes include popular stops like the Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Venezia

You hop off to explore these spots or any stop where you spot a museum, church, cafés or something else interesting. Just remember where you got off so you can hop back on when another bus comes along! I've used similar services when visiting U.S. cities and want to conveniently enjoy a few highlights in a single day or even an afternoon.

More than one company operates this type of service in each city. Search online for the city name and “hop on hop off bus.” Check company websites for terms. Most offer either a one-day pass or timed tickets of 24, 48 or 72 hours. Buy directly from the bus company, not resellers such as Viator.
